Often varicose veins, along with spider veins, are misunderstood. Oftentimes they are considered a cosmetic issue; however, if they are a symptom of a more serious vein condition, it is important that they be treated properly and promptly.
Varicose veins are a result or a symptom of venous insufficiency, which can lead to venous hypertension. This venous hypertension can lead to serious conditions that can weaken the veins and the overall vascular system.
Many think that varicose veins are caused by extended periods of standing, or as a result of old age. In reality, they are caused by a disease that affects the major leg vein called the Great Saphenous Vein and can occur at any age. It is important to know that heredity is an important factor in vein disease, along with gender and age. Varicose veins also commonly occur in pregnant women, and will usually subside after delivery.
It is also important to know when to have varicose veins treated. If the vein disease is allowed to progress it can lead to serious symptoms such as heaviness, cramps, aches, and even changes in the skin, along with ulcers and sores. Varicose veins can also lead to very serious medical conditions including Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis.
Treating varicose veins no longer means the older “vein stripping” procedure. Currently, there are several treatment procedures available. The following are procedures that can effectively and efficiently get rid of varicose veins:
Natural Treatments — Often, natural treatments, such as wearing compression stockings can help alleviate varicose veins.
Vein Treatment with RFA or EVLT — A small laser fiber is inserted into the damaged vein. Pulses of light or radio frequency energy are delivered to cause the vein to collapse and seal shut.
Vein Treatment with Sclerotherapy — With this procedure, ultrasound is used to guide a needle into the vein, followed by a solution or scleroscent being injected to close the vein.
If you are concerned about varicose veins and how they could affect your health, it is important to consult with an experienced physician.
